The Golden Apple Awards for Education Innovation seek to recognize and reward successful programs and encourage their replication throughout the state.
In 2006, Fawn Area Elementary was a recipient of the prestigious Speaker’s Golden Apple for Education Award. We received this award for the Fawn FANS (Focused Activity and Nutrition for Success) program. Being one of five schools honored for educational innovation was a huge success for our staff and students.
In 2007, we were honored with another Golden Apple Award for our Fawn FAB Five school-wide behavior modification program. On April 27, 2007 Representative Stan Saylor once again visited Fawn to hold a press conference to learn more about the FAB Five program and to meet teachers and staff who have worked so hard to make this program worthy of such a high honor. In addition, members of the FAB Five team went to the Pennsylvania State Capitol to accept, on behalf of the school, recognition and a trophy in front of a televised audience.
Most students will identify with the program through the “Fawn Bucks” or “Scholar Dollars”. The Fawn Bucks are awarded to students who are “caught” following one of the five school rules. The “Scholar Dollars” are a means for staff to recognize students for academic achievements and for displaying behaviors that lead to increased student learning.
The Fawn FAB Five program is monitored and maintained by a collaborative team consisting of teachers, support staff, parents, and the principal. The Fawn FAB Five program has been exceptional for our school in that it has increased student engagement, response and learning. The impact on student achievement and pride extends from our youngest students in kindergarten to the high school students who operate our school store.
